A backyard rewards familiarity. Learn the daily routes of chickadees, cardinals, doves, woodpeckers, and jays, then watch for the unfamiliar shape or call that signals migration.

Best approach

Choose one comfortable viewing position, keep binoculars nearby, and record short observations. Native plantings, leaf litter, clean water, and reduced pesticide use make a yard more useful to birds in every season.
